Energy Savings Tips

  • Install a smart thermostat of maximum effciency and savings. Set your thermostat at 78 degrees during the day to keep your energy costs down.
  • Close window shades and drapes to keep out of the heat of the summer sun.
  • Change your HVAC air filter every three months.
  • Rotate ceiling fans counter-clockwise, blowing air downward.
  • Keep all vents open for best performance. Closing vents in unused rooms actually makes your A/C system work harder.
  • In the summer, use appliances that generate heat during the early morning or evening hours when it's cooler.
  • Unplug chargers for phones, tablets, laptops and other devices when not in use - they use energy even when they're not actively charging.

Emergency or Gas Odor

  • Leave the building immediately and warn others.
  • Do not turn on or off any electrical appliances as you leave, even light switches or cell phones, to avoid creating a spark. Then, call Spire (800) 887-4173 from another location.

Safety Tips

Use Energy Wisely

  • Home Heating - Attic insulation could be your best investment. It lowers the cost of both heating and cooling.
  • Cooking - If the burner flame is yellowish instead of blue, clean the burner with soap and water. A blue flame is more efficient than a yellow one.
  • Hot Water - Use the right-size water heater; heating an over-sized tank of water wastes gas.
  • Drying Clothes - Clean your lint trap before each load to improve dryer efficiency.

Wise Water Use

  • Outside your home - Water your lawn only when it needs it. Generally, lawns only need an inch or so of water per week during the summer months.
  • Outside your home - Plant appropriately for your local climate. Check with local nurseries for non-invasive, drought-tolerant plants.
  • Inside your home - Run dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are full. If you have a water-saver cycle, use it.
  • Inside your home - Insulate exposed water pipes with pre-silt foam insulation. You'll enjoy hot water faster and avoid wasting water while it heats up.
